About Us
PHD Associates – or, more properly, Patrick Howard Design Associates LLP – was formed in 1983. Life of the business started as Patrick Howard Design Ltd when our founder, Simon Dobson, was working as an architectural assistant for the Borough of Broxbourne, completing his qualifications part-time. Today, PHD Associates is a family run business, employing 8 staff members and providing a full range of architectural, surveying and town planning services to individuals and both public and private organisations.
Some practices like to specialise in one area of architecture, be it schools, leisure, residential or conservation. Our offering to clients however, is significantly improved through the cross-fertilisation of ideas that our broad range of work requires. For example, our lighting design for a night club has fed into the lighting and sound systems desired by our high-end clients. Our understanding of the archaeology of listed buildings, while fascinating, not only helps to identify how to preserve and restore them but leads to a realisation in how we can improve sustainability in construction today.
Often asked: “What does an architect do?” We, of course, are experienced in matters relating to almost every aspect of the construction process, from town planning to property law, passing through structures, services, rights of light and party walls. Our key role, however, is to establish what the client wants their development to bring to their lives. It could be maximising development profits, creating a wonderful lifetime home or overcoming dissatisfaction with their current property. Our real expertise, in summary, is interpreting the clients vision for their project and bringing these dreams to life.
Simon founded this company in 1983 in Stansted, forming a career out of his passion. Clients and contractors often draw from his wisdom and his enthusiasm for design and architecture value creation. This experience has allowed this company to produce many exciting projects of various scales and sectors.
Anthony is known for his excellent planning conservation and listed building knowledge, clients can leverage is his expertise as an architectural veteran making the planning process run as smooth as possible. He also has a talent for software and 3D modelling skills that is invaluable when communicating with consultants and contractors involved.
Valentina with her background in civil engineering offers a deep understanding in technical construction detailing, building regulations and planning pre-apps. Her Italian background also provides a unique perspective with knowledge of high quality materials and luxurious aesthetics.
Josh’s background in football management brings the team together by allowing the architects to keep track of multiple projects at once. His expert knowledge in planning law and competitive spirit is an asset to the team, which allows the designers to focus on what they do best.
Viraj is the ‘Swiss army knife’ of the team, his skills range from 3D modelling, to technical detailing, and even marketing. His wide range of abilities allows him to provide support for all aspects of business, whether that be managing projects, designing or even producing content to grow the business.
