A Deep Dive into a British Georgian Gem

If you are a property developer, homeowner or property investor looking for architects that have a long history of winning planning approvals and navigating heritage buildings with a rich history, then you have come to the right place.

Listed Building projects can be tricky for property developers as choosing the right architect for the job can mean the difference between a spectacular showpiece or a costly nightmare. For projects as sensitive as these, it is vital to choose an architect with the experience to balance the fine line between respecting heritage and adding value through creative, commercially minded design.

In this article, join us as we showcase one of our prized heritage projects in Norfolk — a perfect example of capturing the magic of a Georgian Grade II listed building while transforming it into a timeless wedding venue.

After all, nothing compliments love more than the charm of an antique wedding hall to officiate the celebration.

Reymerston Hall

Located in Garvestone, a small village in the Breckland district of Norfolk, an area best known for its historic and turbulent moment during World War II, the bomber crash in 1944 — Reymerston Hall holds quite an interesting history. It stands not only as a reminder of the war but also played a vital role during it, having been owned by the late Wing Commander Wallis, a bomber pilot in the Royal Air Force who often flew his autogyros from the adjoining field.

Since then, however, the property has been vacant and neglected for many years, falling into disrepair. Damp had visibly set into the walls, the fireplace was crumbling with large holes in the shaft, and the roof was in poor condition. Nevertheless, the heritage potential of the site still shines through. The beautiful Georgian elevations and red brick, though the joinery is warped and stripped of any weather protection, retain a distant sense of charm.

As Reymerston Hall is such a large site, the conversion into a wedding venue was broken down into several listed building consent applications. This strategy ensured that if the council were to refuse one element, it would not affect the others that were also being submitted for consent.

The restoration of the joinery with meticulous detail was part of the strategy to breathe new life back into Reymerston Hall. Other conservation works included replacing the plastic-coated aluminium guttering with heavy-gauge aluminium square-profile guttering, adding a finishing touch of class to the timeless exterior.

Moreover, the conversion to a wedding venue meant there would be many guests requiring their own suites and bedrooms after a long day of wine and celebration. Links were formed between the Reymerston Hall accommodation and the Ceremonial Hall by creating utility rooms and a bar cellar beneath the Granary, constructed above the historic Coach House. The repair of the roof truss to the Stables was also a considerable piece of work that required care and sensitive restoration.

In later applications, a new stair tower and kitchen hall were added to the north plot to complete the scheme and strengthen the connections between each module of this remarkable heritage site.
